First Annual Conference Attracts

The First Annual SGEA Conference, held in Tifton, GA, January 24, 2008, attracted more than 65 participants from throughout the state.  Hallie Preskill, PhD, 2007 President of the American Evaluation Association delivered the keynote address, "Building Capacity for Evaluation Thinking and Practice." Conference evaluation results demonstrate that participants rated highly two plenary sessions and six workshops delivered by experts in the field.  Learn more...

Smith Receives SGEA Award
Dr. Iris Smith accepts award from SGEA President Laura Beth Tucker at the 2008 Annual Conference.

 

Iris Smith, PhD, received an award at the SGEA's First Annual Conference for providing guidance to SGEA leaders in establishing the organization.  Dr. Smith is is an Associate Professor and Director of the Career Master of Public Health Program at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health where she also teaches graduate courses in substance abuse, social determinants of health and program evaluation. She is also the Co-Lead for Evaluation at the Emory Prevention Research Center (EPRC) and Evaluation Director for the Atlanta Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Emory University.  As part of the EPRC's ongoing efforts to help southwest Georgian's build the region's evaluation capacity, Dr. Smith advised SGEA leaders on the process of developing the organization and affiliating with the American Evaluation Association (AEA). She also conducted a survey to identify evaluation needs in the region.  Dr. Smith is a member both the SGEA and the only other AEA affiliate in Georgia, the Atlanta-area Evaluation Association.
